If you’re looking for a durable and low-maintenance flooring option, vinyl flooring may be the perfect choice for your home. With its wide range of styles and colors, vinyl flooring can add both function and style to your space. Here’s a guide to help you install vinyl flooring like a pro.

Measure and Prepare the Space

Before you begin, measure the room where you will be installing the vinyl flooring. Measure the length and width of the room and multiply the two numbers together to get the square footage. Add 10% to the square footage to account for waste.

Prepare the subfloor by removing any existing flooring, carpet or adhesive residue, and cleaning the surface thoroughly. Make sure the subfloor is level, smooth, and dry.

Acclimate the Vinyl Flooring

Before installing the vinyl flooring, it’s important to acclimate it to the room’s temperature and humidity. Leave the flooring in the room for 48 hours to allow it to adjust.

Lay Out the Vinyl Planks or Tiles

Lay out the vinyl planks or tiles in the room to determine the best layout and pattern. You may need to cut some of the planks or tiles to fit the space. Use a straightedge and a utility knife to make clean cuts.

Install the First Row

Begin installation at the longest straight wall in the room. Cut off the tongue on the first plank and lay it with the cut edge against the wall. Leave a 1/4-inch gap between the plank and the wall to allow for expansion. Insert spacers between the plank and the wall.

Install the Rest of the First Row

Lay the second plank next to the first, using the tongue-and-groove locking system to connect the planks. Tap the planks gently with a rubber mallet to ensure a tight fit. Continue installing planks along the first row, cutting the last plank to fit if necessary.

Start the Second Row

Begin the second row with the cut piece from the first row, as long as it is at least 6 inches long. If not, cut a new plank in half to begin the second row. Stagger the end joints of the planks in each row by at least 6 inches for a more natural look.

Continue Installing the Vinyl Flooring

Continue installing the vinyl flooring by repeating the process of laying the planks and tiles, using the tongue-and-groove locking system to connect them. Use a tapping block and rubber mallet to ensure a tight fit between the planks.

Cut Around Obstacles

If you need to cut planks or tiles to fit around obstacles such as doorways, use a jigsaw or a utility knife to make the cuts. Remember to leave a 1/4-inch gap around the perimeter of the room for expansion.

Install Transition Strips

Once you have installed the vinyl flooring, install transition strips to cover the gaps between the vinyl flooring and other types of flooring. Use a saw or a utility knife to cut the strips to the correct length.

Clean Up and Enjoy

Once you have finished installing the vinyl flooring and transition strips, remove the spacers and clean up any debris. Enjoy your new flooring, which is easy to maintain and will look great for years to come.

Installing vinyl flooring can be a straightforward process with the right tools and techniques. By measuring and preparing the space, acclimating the flooring, laying out the planks or tiles, and following the proper installation methods, you can create a beautiful and durable floor that will enhance your home’s style and function. With these tips from a homeowner, you’ll be able to tackle this DIY project with confidence.

Like almost every home decor product or remolding material, there are different types to a single product. Vinyl flooring is no different.

As you take your journey down the home remodeling aisles, home decor blogs, or DIY articles, you’ll find variations to almost anything pertaining to home remodeling.

To help lessen the confusion of what is a specific type of flooring and how it compares to another type of flooring, we’ve listed below the different types of Vinyl Flooring.

Find what the difference is between the different types of vinyl flooring.

Let’s break down the differences of Vinyl Flooring

Plank

Vinyl planks gives the desired look of hardwood floors without the expense. Vinyl planks offer: more resistant to stains and more durable than the traditional hardwood planks.

Tile

Vinyl tile are simply tile shaped – they come in various square shape sizes, giving the appearance of stone tile. One advantage choosing vinyl tiles is that if one tile gets damaged, it’s easier to replace. Also, you can arrange the tiles in different patterns.

Sheet

Vinyl sheet flooring comes in a single roll. Sheets can be 6 to 12 feet wide. Vinyl sheets offer less exposable seams and is ideal for high-moisture areas (e.g., bathrooms and kitchens).

Aside from the different types of Vinyl, you should also know the surface types.

First one is Vinyl No Wax
Vinyl No Wax offers the least amount of resistance to scuffs and stains.

Second one is Urethane.
Urethane is a durable and low maintenance. Resistant to black heel marks and most household chemicals.

Lastly, Enhanced Urethane.
Enhanced Urethan simply an upgraded version of Urethane, making it more resilient to scuffs and stains.
