Factors to Consider when Choosing Pet-Friendly Flooring

As a dog owner, I understand that choosing the right flooring for your furry friend can be an overwhelming task. To make things easier, let’s take a closer look at some key factors to consider when selecting pet-friendly flooring.

For starters, scratch resistance is crucial for furry paws. Water and stain resistance is equally essential for those little accidents. Upkeep and maintenance are significant in the long run. Comfort and traction are important for avoiding slips and injuries. And of course, let’s talk about the costs and how to find the best value for your budget.

Scratch Resistance

Selecting flooring with scratch resistance is vital for pet owners. A durable and robust floor can withstand animal claws and last longer. Luxury vinyl, tile, and engineered hardwood are top picks as they offer high scratch resistance, making them ideal for homes with pets.

Luxury vinyl flooring mimics the texture and appearance of natural wood or tiles while providing superior protection against scratches. Tile flooring offers a hard surface that could hold up against sharp nails and accidental spills. Engineered hardwood is durable and capable of resisting scratches caused by pet paws.

Pets can cause scratching damages on floors over time, affecting their aesthetic appeal and functionality. Thus, selecting a floor material that is less prone to scratches ensures the longevity of the flooring.

Fact: According to PetMD.com, trimming pet’s nails appropriately is essential in maintaining healthy cat or dog feet while reducing floor damage risks.

Your floors can handle muddy paws and spilled drinks with these water and stain-resistant options.

Water and Stain Resistance

Flooring that is resistant to water and stains is essential for pet owners as pets can cause accidents leading to spills and messes.

Here are some important factors to consider when choosing a flooring option for pet owners:

Water and stain resistance are important factors to consider when choosing a flooring option for pet owners.

Opting for materials like tile, luxury vinyl, or laminate which have high water and stain resistance can be an ideal solution.

Tiles such as porcelain, ceramic, and natural stone are durable options that repel water and stains making them perfect for households with pets.

Luxury vinyl is also suitable as it has a protective layer on its surface that resists damage from spills, while laminate flooring comes with an additional coating which makes it durable against liquid penetrations.

Additionally, engineered hardwood planks treated with waterproof technology provide peace of mind to homeowners who want both the aesthetic appeal without sacrificing the functionality they need.

Materials that rank low in terms of water-stain resistance may not be practical choices if one has active pets.

It’s crucial to keep in mind that the level of water and stain resistance may vary across different brands and types of flooring. However, considering materials that have high levels of protection against these elements will ensure longevity in your floors even with pets around.

According to a survey conducted by The American Pet Products Association (APPA) in 2020, 54 million households own at least one dog.

Keeping your pet-friendly flooring clean is like trying to keep a toddler clean after playing in the mud – it’s exhausting but necessary.

Upkeep

Maintaining the cleanliness and quality of pet-friendly flooring is a crucial aspect of upkeep. Cleaning up spills and accidents immediately can help prevent damage and reduce odors. Regular sweeping, vacuuming, and mopping can also keep the floors in good condition. It’s essential to use cleaning products that are safe for both pets and the flooring material to avoid causing long-term harm.

It’s recommended to avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive tools, like steel wool, when cleaning pet-friendly floors to prevent scratching or discoloration. Additionally, consider adding area rugs or mats in high traffic areas or under food and water bowls to catch spills or debris.

A vital part of upkeep is identifying signs of damage early on. Chipped tiles or scratches on hardwood floors can worsen over time if left untreated. Fixing small issues promptly can save money and time in the long run by preventing larger repairs.

Pro Tip: Consider investing in furniture pads for table legs and chairs to protect against accidental scratching on pet-friendly flooring. Your furry friend will thank you for choosing a pet-friendly flooring option with comfort and traction in mind.

Comfort and Traction

When choosing pet-friendly flooring, it’s important to think about the comfort and traction it provides for your four-legged friend. Here are some factors to consider:

The flooring shouldn’t be too hard or cold to the touch.

It should have a non-slip surface that provides a good grip, so your pet can walk and play without slipping or sliding.

Choose a texture that provides enough traction but isn’t too rough on delicate paw pads.

Consider a slightly cushioned surface that will give your pet more support when walking and reduce impact if they fall or jump.

Avoid materials that absorb heat – especially in hot climates – as they can get uncomfortable for pets who tend to lie on the floor.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that some materials need mats or rugs placed on them for extra cushioning. This is especially true of tiles, which can be quite hard.

Pro Tip: Test out different flooring textures with your pet before making a decision, as dogs’ preferences vary greatly.

Your wallet and your furry friend will both appreciate these cost-effective flooring options.

Cost

Keeping the cost in mind is imperative while selecting pet-friendly flooring options. It is a crucial factor that can impact your decision to a great extent as various materials have different price ranges.

Tile and luxury vinyl are budget-friendly options that offer durability, stain resistance and require low maintenance costs over time. Laminate and engineered hardwood are costly but provide the same benefits.

Furthermore, careful research beforehand can significantly reduce the final cost of purchasing new flooring. Installing similarly priced materials may differ in installation fees resulting in an overall reduction in expenses.

Pro Tip: Purchase all of your necessary supplies beforehand to avoid additional costs incurred due to multiple trips to the store during installation.

Whether your dog has the paws of a saint or the claws of a devil, these pet-friendly flooring options will hold up.

Best Flooring Options for Dogs

As a pet owner, I know how important it is to have a reliable flooring option that can withstand the wear and tear caused by our furry friends. In this segment, we’ll explore the best flooring options for dogs. From tile to engineered hardwood, we’ll examine the various materials available and how they fare against scratches from claws, potty accidents, and slipping hazards. Each sub-section will focus on a specific flooring type and will provide insights into the benefits and potential drawbacks of each option, so you can make an informed decision when choosing the perfect flooring for your pet.

Tile

Tile flooring is also relatively easy to clean and maintain. A simple sweep or mop will keep it looking clean and free of pet hair and dander.

One unique advantage of choosing tile over other options is that it does not trap allergens or odors, making it an excellent hypoallergenic option for pet owners.

While the initial cost may be higher, choosing tile as your pet-friendly flooring option can save you money in the long run due to its durability and longevity.

Overall, if you’re looking for a durable, low-maintenance and hypoallergenic flooring option that stands up well against scratches, tile flooring might just be your best bet. Don’t miss out on this great option for your furry friend’s comfort and safety.

Choosing the right flooring for your furry friends can be ruff, but porcelain tile makes it paw-sible.

Porcelain Tile

Porcelain tiles are a durable and scratch-resistant flooring option for pet owners. They are made from dense clay that is fired at high temperatures, making them highly resistant to moisture and stains. Porcelain tiles come in various colors and designs, including those that resemble natural stone or hardwood flooring. Their smooth surface provides good traction for pets without causing discomfort to their paws.

Porcelain tile flooring is easy to clean with regular sweeping and occasional mopping. However, it can be quite hard, which may not be comfortable for some pets to lie on. Adding soft area rugs in areas where your pets frequent can provide some extra cushioning.

Moreover, porcelain tiles are known for their longevity with proper installation. They can last upwards of 15-20 years before requiring any maintenance or replacement.

A friend of mine who has a large dog opted for porcelain tile throughout their entire house due to its durability. She mentioned that despite numerous dog scratches on the floor over the years, her tile flooring still looks like new.

Ceramic tile: for pets who like to live dangerously and owners who don’t like clean floors.

Ceramic Tile

When it comes to selecting pet-friendly flooring options, ceramic tile is a highly recommended choice. Ceramic tiles are made of natural clay materials with added minerals and water before being baked in a kiln at high temperatures, resulting in a dense and durable product. This type of tile is ideal for areas where pets tend to spend more time since it’s scratch-resistant, stain-resistant, and waterproof.

Ceramic tiles come in various sizes and colors allowing homeowners to create unique designs that can complement any interior style or preference. Additionally, they offer great traction that prevents slips and falls while running or playing around. The surface does not allow the buildup of hair, odor, or bacteria; hence making it easy to clean.

Compared with other flooring options discussed in this article, ceramic tile may not be as comfortable for pets to rest on as its hard surface could be tough on their joints. Despite this downside, choosing a larger square format increases comfortability. Nonetheless, installing small rugs or matting could solve this problem.

To ensure optimal results when using ceramic tiles for pet-friendly flooring needs, proper installation procedures must be followed. Installers should use specialized grout that inhibits bacteria growth while ensuring the surface is level enough so pets won’t trip over raised edges or uneven surfaces.

Even your dog will be impressed with the natural beauty of stone tile flooring.

Natural Stone Tile

This flooring option, which is made of natural stone tile, is highly durable and scratch-resistant. It can withstand even the most active dogs’ claws without showing signs of damage. Additionally, it is water-resistant and does not stain easily, making it an excellent choice for pets that may have accidents or spills. Natural stone tile is also easy to clean and maintain, making it a practical option for pet owners.

When choosing natural stone tile flooring, it’s essential to consider the specific type of stone used to ensure that it meets your needs regarding durability and slip resistance. Porous stones like marble are beautiful but prone to scratches and staining from pet urine. On the other hand, granite is more durable and resistant to damage but can be slippery when wet.

However, it’s worth noting that natural stone tile can be a pricier option compared to other options on the market. It requires professional installation because improper installation can lead to cracks or chips in the tiles, which can be hazardous for both humans and pets.

In ancient times, natural stones were used as flooring materials in temples, homes due to their durability and sustainability. The Romans specifically employed mosaic designs using different colored stones like marble or travertine. Nowadays, people still use natural stones like granite, travertine, limestone primarily for aesthetic purposes because they’re luxurious options that look great in any setting.

Vinyl floors are paw-fect for pets, offering durability and style without breaking the bank.

Luxury Vinyl

This flooring option known as ‘Luxury Vinyl’ has gained popularity among pet owners due to its durability and ease of maintenance. Luxury Vinyl is a synthetic material that mimics the texture, appearance, and feel of natural hardwood or stone flooring. It is exceptionally resistant to scratching, moisture and stains, making it an ideal choice for pet owners who value practicality and aesthetics.

Luxury Vinyl comes in two forms – Plank and Tile. Both versions have multiple layers, including a top layer made with urethane that gives it scratch-resistant capabilities. The plank variation is designed to look and feel just like genuine wooden floors while the tile variation looks similar to ceramic or natural stone floors.

Unlike real wood or stone floors that require regular polishing and sealing, luxury vinyl needs little maintenance other than regular sweeping or vacuuming. Pet accidents can easily be cleaned up with a mild soap solution without leaving any residue behind.

Additionally, Luxury Vinyl is slip-resistant and highly comfortable underfoot, which makes it an excellent choice for pets with mobility issues. Its rubber-like backing provides traction, making it easier for pets to move around effortlessly without slipping.

To further enhance the advantages of Luxury Vinyl concerning your furry friend’s well-being, placing doormats at entryways could minimize dirt buildup on the floor surface. Using furniture pads under heavy objects could make sliding items less likely to cause scratches on the surface.

Choosing ‘Luxury Vinyl’ as your flooring option would result in an aesthetically pleasing, cost-efficient and durable floor surface in your house while providing comfortability for your furry friends. Your dog may not know what luxury is, but they’ll certainly appreciate the scratch-resistant and waterproof qualities of luxury vinyl plank flooring.

Luxury Vinyl Plank

One of the best options for pet-friendly flooring is a luxurious variation of vinyl called Luxury Vinyl Plank or LVP. This type of flooring mimics the look and feel of hardwood flooring, making it an attractive option for many pet owners. It is typically made up of multiple layers, including a wear layer, printing layer, core layer, and backing layer. These layers work together to provide enhanced durability and comfort.

Luxury Vinyl Plank is highly durable and resistant to scratches caused by pet claws, which can save pet owners from expensive repairs or replacements down the line. Additionally, this type of flooring is waterproof and stain-resistant due to its waterproof core material. It also requires minimal upkeep as it simply needs to be swept and vacuumed regularly.

Unique details about Luxury Vinyl Plank include its ability to provide more traction than other flooring types due to its textured surface. This can be beneficial for pets with mobility issues such as arthritis or hip dysplasia. Additionally, some luxury vinyl plank options come with soundproofing capabilities that can aid in reducing noise levels from pets running around on the floor.

According to a recent article titled ‘Factors to Consider when Choosing Pet-Friendly Flooring,’ Luxury Vinyl Plank is considered one of the best flooring options for dogs due to its durability, low maintenance requirements, water resistance, and scratch-resistance abilities.

Upgrade your home and your dog’s Instagram game with luxury vinyl tile flooring.

Luxury Vinyl Tile

In addition to its durability and waterproof properties, Luxury Vinyl Tile has excellent traction, providing pets with a secure footing. Its surface is easy to clean, requiring only regular sweeping or vacuuming and periodic mopping to keep it looking new.

A unique advantage of Luxury Vinyl Tile is its ability to reduce noise levels by absorbing sound. This quality makes it perfect for pet owners who want a peaceful home environment.

Pro Tip: Place rugs or mats in high traffic areas to protect the Luxury Vinyl Tile from excessive wear and tear caused by pets’ nails.

Laminate flooring: perfect for those who want their dog to have a sleek slide to their bowl.

Laminate

One of the best flooring options for pets is the synthetic flooring called ‘Laminate.’ Laminate flooring is a multi-layered product that replicates hardwood or stone floors. The top layer of laminate is an anti-scratch and water-resistant coating, perfect for pet owners who prefer hardwood or stone aesthetics with decreased upkeep and enhanced durability. Laminate’s smooth surface provides excellent traction for pets to walk or run on without slipping.

Laminate flooring offers affordability, durability, and aesthetic appeal. The laminate production process involves fusing different layers of materials under high pressure, creating an extremely durable and robust product. Moreover, due to advancements in manufacturing technology, today’s laminate tiles often provide realistic replication of hardwood and stone patterns with increased scratch resistance.

In recent years, there have been concerns about how safe laminate floors are for pets because some brands used harmful adhesives in their bonding processes. These worries led to a range of new products utilizing safer adhesives with reduced volatile organic compounds (VOCs) levels to create healthier home spaces for humans and pets alike.

Why settle for real hardwood when you can have engineered hardwood that’s pet-pee-proof?

Engineered Hardwood

One of the top flooring options for pets is a variety of wood flooring known as ‘Engineered Hardwood.’ This type of flooring retains the aesthetic appeal of traditional hardwood, but it has added durability and sustainability. Engineered hardwood consists of multiple layers bound together with adhesive and heat, which makes it more resistant to scratches and dents.

Additionally, engineered hardwood comes in various styles and colors that mimic traditional hardwood floors while providing higher durability. It is also an excellent choice for pet owners who prefer sustainable living since it uses less natural wood than typical solid hardwood floorings.

It is important to note that although engineered hardwood is highly resistant to moisture, excessive water, and spills can cause damage to its surface. Therefore, pet owners should take immediate measures to wipe off any spills or stains as soon as possible.

For optimum results with pets inside the house, experts suggest choosing matte finishes instead of glossy finishes. Matte finishes are more textured and provide better traction for pets while they run around.

Lastly, additional protective coatings such as a layer of urethane can help protect against scratches caused by pets’ nails better. These coatings can also extend the lifespan of your engineered hardwood floors.

Overall, when looking for a durable flooring option for your pet-friendly household, engineered hardwood proves an excellent choice because it provides beauty and strength within budget-friendly options available in the market. Time to weigh the pros and cons, like a teeter-totter for your pet’s paws.

Pros and Cons of Each Flooring Option

As a homeowner with pets, you undoubtedly understand the importance of finding flooring that stands up to the wear and tear of your furry friends. Each type of flooring has its pros and cons, and it can be tough to determine the best option for your home and pets.

In this discussion, we’ll take a close look at several popular flooring options. We’ll explore the advantages and challenges of each, so you can make an informed decision that prioritizes both the comfort and safety of your pets and the durability of your flooring.

Tile

Porcelain, ceramic and natural stone are high-quality types of tile that provide durability and scratch resistance. They are also water-resistant, providing a protective covering that can withstand spills and accidents. Tile flooring requires low maintenance, making it a great option for pet owners who wish to keep their home clean and hygienic. Additionally, tile provides excellent traction to prevent slips and falls for pets.

Luxury vinyl flooring is an alternative to traditional tile. Luxury vinyl plank or tile is manufactured in various shapes and sizes, allowing homeowners more flexibility in creating a unique look while maintaining the benefits of tile such as durability, water resistance, ease of maintenance and traction for pets.

Tile has various advantages such as durability, scratch-resistance, water-resistance, easy maintenance and safety due to its excellent traction properties. It can also help in keeping homes hygienic by resisting bacteria growth.

Tile is one of the oldest flooring materials used as it was found in ruins dating back from Egypt around 4th millennium BC. Today’s technology has made tiles have many varieties in terms of colors, designs, textures and shapes.

Leave your worries at the door with luxury vinyl floors that promise durability, style, and happy pet paws.

Luxury Vinyl

Luxury vinyl is highly durable and resistant to water, stains and scratches. It is also easy to clean, making it perfect for pet homes where messes are common. Additionally, luxury vinyl provides comfort underfoot and gives pets good traction, thus reducing slips and injuries.

Furthermore, Luxury vinyl flooring options are cost-effective compared to other materials such as hardwood or natural stone. LVP and LVT can mimic more luxurious options such as oak wood or marble tiles but at a fraction of the cost.

Laminate: when you want a flooring option that’s easy on your budget and hard on Fido’s claws.

Laminate

Moreover, laminate flooring comes in a variety of styles, colors, and textures, allowing pet owners to choose the design that meets their preferences. Additionally, laminate is less expensive than hardwood but can give a similar look at a fraction of the cost.

One significant drawback of laminate flooring is that it cannot be refinished if damaged or worn out. Once the protective wear layer has been compromised by scratches or stains, replacing the entire floor may be necessary.

According to the article ‘Factors to Consider when Choosing Pet-Friendly Flooring’, choosing scratch-resistant and water-resistant flooring options like tile or luxury vinyl may prevent floor damage caused by pets. Make sure your pet doesn’t have a taste for expensive shoes before installing engineered hardwood.

Engineered Hardwood

The flooring option created by using a layered structure of wood is a good choice for pet owners – Engineered Hardwood. This type of flooring does not expand and contract like solid hardwood, making it more stable in areas with humidity and moisture.

Engineered Hardwood floors are durable because they combine the natural beauty of hardwood with engineered construction that resists wear and tear caused by pets’ claws.

Unlike other flooring options, Engineered Hardwood comes in various finishes such as hand-scraped, wire-brushed, or smooth. Additionally, it allows pet owners to refinish their floors when they become damaged.

Studies show that Engineered Hardwood’s resale value can increase homes’ value in comparison to other standard flooring options with an average return rate of 70-80% (National Wood Flooring Association).

Conclusion: Choosing the Best Flooring Option for You and Your Pet

As a pet owner, choosing the right flooring option for your furry friend is crucial for both the pet’s comfort and your ease of cleaning. Here are some key considerations for choosing the best flooring option for you and your pet:

Durability: Opt for durable flooring that can withstand scratches, stains and wear and tear caused by your pet’s paws and accidents.

Traction: Choose flooring with good traction to prevent your pet from slipping and getting hurt. This is especially important for older or arthritic pets.

Anti-Allergic: Consider flooring that is easy to clean, hypoallergenic and resistant to pet hair, dander and odor.

It is also important to keep in mind that different types of pets have different flooring needs. For example, cats prefer soft and comfortable surfaces like carpets and rugs, whereas dogs prefer durable and easy-to-clean options like hardwood floors or tiles.

To ensure your pet’s safety and comfort, avoid using toxic flooring materials such as vinyl, which emit harmful chemicals. Instead, opt for eco-friendly and sustainable options like bamboo or cork floors, which are not only safer for your pet but also healthier for your family and the environment.

Incorporating these flooring options will help create a space that accommodates every pet and their individual needs, without compromising on style or comfort.

Selling a house can be a daunting task, and the last thing you want is for your flooring to become a hindrance to a quick sale or a high price. Choosing the right type of flooring can make all the difference in the world when it comes to attracting potential buyers and making your home stand out. But what type of flooring is best to install when planning to sell a house?

Hardwood Flooring: A Timeless Classic

Hardwood flooring is a classic and timeless choice that adds warmth and elegance to any home. It’s durable, easy to maintain, and can last for decades with proper care. Hardwood flooring also has a high resale value, making it a smart investment for homeowners looking to sell their homes.

Laminate Flooring: A Cost-Effective Option

If you’re looking for a cost-effective option that still looks great, laminate flooring might be the right choice for you. Laminate flooring is easy to install, requires minimal maintenance, and is available in a wide variety of styles and colors. While laminate flooring may not have the same resale value as hardwood flooring, it’s still a great choice for home sellers who want a high-quality look without breaking the bank.

Tile Flooring: A Durable and Stylish Option

Tile flooring is a durable and stylish option that is perfect for high-traffic areas like kitchens and bathrooms. It’s easy to clean, resistant to water and stains, and comes in a variety of textures, colors, and patterns. Tile flooring also has a high resale value, making it a great investment for home sellers who want to add value to their homes.

Carpet Flooring: A Cozy and Inviting Choice

Carpet flooring is a cozy and inviting choice that can add warmth and comfort to any room. It’s available in a wide range of colors and textures, and it’s great for creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Carpet flooring can also help reduce noise and improve indoor air quality. However, carpet flooring may not be the best choice for home sellers who want to appeal to buyers with allergies or who want a more modern look.

Vinyl Flooring: A Versatile and Affordable Option

Vinyl flooring is a versatile and affordable option that can mimic the look of hardwood, tile, or stone flooring. It’s durable, easy to maintain, and resistant to water and stains. Vinyl flooring is also a great option for home sellers who want to create a cohesive look throughout their homes.

When it comes to choosing the right flooring for your home, there are many factors to consider. While hardwood flooring is a timeless classic that adds value to any home, it may not be the best choice for every seller. Laminate flooring is a cost-effective option that still looks great, while tile flooring is durable and stylish. Carpet flooring is cozy and inviting, but may not appeal to all buyers. Vinyl flooring is a versatile and affordable option that can mimic the look of more expensive flooring types. Ultimately, the best flooring for your home will depend on your personal preferences, budget, and the preferences of potential buyers in your area. By choosing the right flooring, you can make your home more appealing to buyers and increase your chances of a quick sale at a high price.

Microbes are everywhere! The world was stopped by a microbe ( psst, it was COVID-19 ). Invisible organisms are powerful. They don’t care who they affect. They can be friend or foe.

Humans need microbes to regulate certain functions in our bodies but introduce a foreign element to it and everything in our bodies goes out-of-whack.

What Is a Microbe?

First, let’s understand what is a microbe? It’s a microorganism, especially a bacterium causing disease or fermentation. It could be a bacteria, fungi, or virus.

What Kills a Microbe?

We have defenses against these foreign elements: chemicals, hand sanitizers, scented sprays, wipes and special treated surfaces that kill microbes on contact. We have gotten so good at defeating microbes that we have gone over board and are beginning to hurt ourselves with the chemicals.

There are times that we can’t regulate what we or our family comes in to contact – it’s nearly impossible to fight an invisible threat. But there are tools that help, like Anti-microbial floors.

What are Anti-Microbial Floors

Anti-microbial floors hinder the growth of microorganisms; bacteria, fungi, and molds cannot grow on these surfaces. Floors without seams, welds, or grout lives don’t give microbes the opportunity to grow.

Anti-Microbial floors are either in the sealant of the flooring or throughout the floor panel with an EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) registered antimicrobial component. See how and what vinyl flooring is made from to better understand the layers of the floor panel.

If you are looking for extra protection for your home, flooring that helps prevent the growth of microbes is something to look into.

Anti-microbial flooring come in vinyl floor panels, hardwood floor panels, tiles and laminate flooring.

Tiles are pretty much the best flooring option to choose for a bathroom install; they run in different shapes and designs, are very durable and don’t break if water is absorbed like hardwood.

Albeit, tiles are a great flooring option for bathrooms, there are things you should be aware before purchasing tiles.

Tiles Tend To Be Slippery

The surface on tiles are not the same. Some are slippery and some aren’t that slippery. The test to determine the surface resistance is called Coefficient of Friction (COF). The lower COF rating a tile has, the least slippery it is – for example, the patio tile outside the pool are considered high because of it’s slip resistant while the surface of ice has a high COF rating. DCOF is Dynamic Coefficient of Friction – today’s standard tile testing.

As stated by the TCNA (Tile Council of North America) ANSI A137.1-2012 says that “ceramic tiles selected for level interior spaces expected to be walked upon must have a minimum wet DCOF AcuTest value of > 0.42. Tiles with a lower value are not necessarily restricted to dry areas only, but rather are restricted to applications where they are kept dry when walked upon. In the case of residential bathrooms, the common use of bathmats can accomplish this. Similarly, in entranceways, the use of entrance mats can accomplish the same.
– Tile Slip Test

Tiles that are meant for outdoor should not be used for interior installs, chances of injury are greatly increased.

The Bathroom Is Not Heavily Walked On

Bathrooms will probably receive the least amount of foot traffic in your home. There is a rating for tile’s prone to surface damage – the Porcelain Enamel Institute (PEI), measures the abrasion resistance, scores range 1-5. Bathrooms tiles should be a PEI 2, suitable for it’s low traffic.

Porous Tiles

Indoor tiles are less forgiving when it comes to water seepage. Any type of tile (ceramic, marble, porcelain, limestone, slate, travertine) can be used for indoor flooring. Outdoor tiles are the ones prone to crack from water entering it. If water does enter the tile and temperature drops below freezing the tile will crack. Outdoor tiles need to be made of only porcelain, which has the lowest absorption of water.
